Saipem launches Bluenzyme, a carbon capture tech for small and medium emitters

Saipem launched Bluenzyme, a CO2 capture solution, using proprietary enzymatic technology “CO2 Solutions by SAIPEM”.

Saipem is a company in the engineering and construction of energy and infrastructure projects, on both offshore and onshore.

Bluenzyme claims to be a ready-to-use package for small and medium emitters. The product has a capture capacity of 200 tonnes of CO2 per day.

The Bluenzyme is designed for the hard-to-abate sectors including oil & gas, petrochemicals, energy and cement production, etc. These companies need a good carbon capturing and reducing solution to achieve carbon neutrality. Bluenzyme acts on the post-combustion emissions caused as a result of production.

The technology called “CO2 Solutions by SAIPEM” utilizes a non-toxic, non-volatile solvent based on the use of the carbonic anhydrase enzyme.

According to the company, this enzyme is claimed to be a potent natural catalyst for capturing carbon dioxide. It is present in almost all living organisms for respiration.

Saipem claims, that after an analysis, it developed this solution for CO2 capture that is cost-effective and environmentally sustainable than traditional processes. The company claims that the tech is “suitable for the use of recoverable heat from low temperature sources.”

Fabrizio Botta, Chief Commercial Officer at Saipem, said, “We are proud to be able to offer our customers the BluenzymeTM 200 solution, an off-the-shelf product based on proprietary technology that is the result of our relentless commitment to research and development of increasingly flexible, efficient and sustainable solutions.”

“BluenzymeTM 200 represents a concrete solution to allow companies to reach their ESG goals and move closer to the target of a zero-carbon future that Saipem is striving to achieve.”

The company claims Bluenzyme applies to any plant due to its design. The modules are manufactured offsite and installed on the site.

The company site states “This modular approach and the adoption of a dedicated supply chain reduce project execution time, costs, and risks, making BluenzymeTM a cost-effective, sustainable, and rapidly available industrial solution.”
